2011 Saul Bell Design Award Competition Call For Entries

Now entering its second decade, the Saul Bell Design Award competition invites you to seize the challenge, to push your most daring design ideas to the center of the spotlight. Note: please see the Emerging Artist page for details and scheduling of this portion of the competition.

Who May Enter

We invite members of the jewelry-making or hollowware community and students of a jewelry or hollowware training program to embrace the challenge and take part in the eleventh annual Saul Bell Design Award competition. Employees of Rio Grande or of any affiliate or participating company (and their immediate family members) may not participate.

Judging Criteria

Pieces are judged on the following criteria:
  • The innovation and uniqueness of the design.
  • The successful incorporation of media into the design.
  • The quality of workmanship (for final judging).

How to Enter

You may submit as many entries as you wish, although only one finalist per category will be awarded to a single designer.

To Enter Online

Enter now and follow the online instructions to submit your registration. You will be able to choose whether to submit your rendering or photograph online or by mail. If you choose to submit your image electronically, you will be prompted to pay your entry fee and the image processing fee via credit card at the end of your registration. If you choose to mail in your submission, you will complete your online registration then send each rendering or photograph with a copy of the entry form (one per entry) and the $45 entry fee (per entry) to the address below.

Attention: Design Awards
Submitting your Design
The preliminary round of judging requires a rendering or photograph of your design (must be at least 4" x 6") mounted on an 8½" x 11" white matte board; no slides will be accepted. A single image is preferred, although composites are appropriate if multiple views are relevant to your specific design.

Online Image Submission
If you register online, you have the option of submitting your rendering or photograph electronically. For an additional $35 fee Rio will print and mount an 8½" x 11" photo of your image for preliminary judging. Please submit a high-quality .pdf or .jpg file no larger than 10 megabytes. If you choose to submit your image electronically, you will be prompted to pay this fee via credit card at the completion of your registration.
Please keep a copy of your rendering or photograph; submissions will not be returned. Do not send finished pieces unless asked to do so by Rio Grande. Submissions which do not meet entry criteria may be disqualified.
The Categories
Choose one of six design categories as the foundation of your piece, and integrate any additional stones or materials you wish into your jewelry or hollowware design. Submitted pieces must be a wearable jewelry style (except in the hollowware category) and must be composed of at least 75% of the material specified in the chosen category. The piece must not have won an award in any other competition prior to entry submission.

Finalists
Finalists will be notified and asked to produce their designs for final judging. Finished pieces must be received by January 21, 2011. Winning and finalist pieces will be returned to designers by August 26, 2011.

Winners
Winners will be notified by phone and/or mail and announced formally to the public during JCK Las Vegas, 2011.

Publication
Rio Grande will secure photography for winning and finalist pieces. All images will remain the property of Rio Grande. Rio Grande reserves the right to use the finished pieces in any promotions. Designers (and sponsors/contributors when applicable) will be given credit any time their piece is featured in any promotion by Rio Grande.

Emerging Artist
Now in its fourth year, the SBDA Emerging Artist competition celebrates young designers and their creativity. This competition is open to designers 18 years of age or younger. Registration begins August 27, 2010. For more information visit the Emerging Artist page or call 800.396.9896 x13265.
