WHO CAN ENTER?
A: The Saul Bell Design Award competition is open to designers and hollowware artists from across the globe; however, we're unable to accept entries from certain countries due to any U.S. sanctions in place, difficulty getting goods in/out of certain countries, and difficulty insuring deliveries to certain countries. Employees of Rio Grande or of any affiliate company and their immediate family members may not participate.
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO ENTER?
A: The entry fee for all categories (except Emerging Jewelry Artist) is:
$75 through the Early Bird period (exact date varies each year)
$125 after the Early Bird period ends through deadline (deadline date varies each year).
*The fee for Emerging Jewelry Artist entries is $25 per entry through deadline date (date varies each year).
IMPORTANT: The fee must be paid for each individual entry. Multiple submissions require payment of multiple entry fees.
MAY I SUBMIT ENTRIES IN MORE THAN ONE CATEGORY?
A: Yes; however, you will need to complete a separate registration (and pay the fee) for each entry. If you use the same email address, all of your information will auto-populate after the first entry to help streamline the registration process for multiple entries.
NOTE: Although the same piece may be entered in more than one category (as appropriate), the piece can become a finalist in only one category.
MAY I SUBMIT MORE THAN ONE ENTRY IN THE SAME CATEGORY?
A: Yes; however, please be aware that no artist can be named as a finalist more than once in any one category.
MY PIECE HAS SOLD OR MY RENDERING HAS CHANGED; MAY I SUBMIT A SUBSTITUTE?
A: Yes, as long as the replacement piece strongly resembles to the original piece that it is replacing.
HOW MANY IMAGES CAN I SUBMIT WITH EACH PIECE? I WANT TO SHOW MULTIPLE VIEWS.
A: You can submit only one image file (JPEG or one-page PDF) per entry. If you would like to show multiple views (front/back, open/closed, etc.), please submit a single file showing the desired views together, like a one-page collage. Please bear in mind that you want the image(s) to showcase your piece at its best; make sure any props you use do not distract in any way from your design. (Example)
NOTE: Any image submitted for a Collection category must include all the pieces submitted in the collection for judging.
ONCE I'VE SUBMITTED MY FINISHED PIECE, HOW LONG WILL IT BE KEPT BY THE COMPETITION?
A: All finalist jewelry and hollowware pieces for the 2020 competition are returned to the artists by the end of April, 2020. The winning pieces are returned by the end of June, 2020.
DO I NEED TO SEND IN MY FINISHED PIECE (INSTEAD OF A PHOTO OR RENDERING) BY THE ENTRY DEADLINE?
MAY I DO SO IF I CHOOSE TO?
A: No; for the first round of judging, all entries must be either a photograph or a rendering, not a finished piece. The file you send may be a JPEG or one-page PDF and must be no more than 10MB in size. If your design is selected as a finalist, you will be asked to submit the finished piece before the deadline for the final judging round.
